What is this talk about?National Service (NS) has been weaved into the life of every Singaporean household. Currently, every Singaporean male has to serve 2yrs of full-time NS at the age of 18 either in the Singapore Armed Forces, Civil Defence or Police Force. This is not just a 2-years experience; NS duties continue for at least a decade following the full-time stint!

Here are some questions which will be covered in the talk:
- What exactly takes place during NS?
- What is the place of NS in the life of a Christian?
- How should we manage and respond to our NS experiences?
- Are there physical & spiritual dangers that Christian NSmen should be mindful of? What types of temptations do they face? What does the bible teach us concerning these temptations?
- How should the family & local church support their men who are serving NS?
- Should we ever consider a full-time career in the uniformed service?
- Should we support the notion that females should also serve NS?
- If NS is to be a part of our lives, how can we glorify God when serving NS?
Who should attend this talk?
This talk will help the NS enlistee prepare himself for the experiences ahead. It will also help their parents, family members, and members of the local church understand how they can support their NSmen brethren better through the challenges they face. The presentation will be done in an interactive manner using slides as visual aids. The audience will be given opportunities to ask questions and (potentially) contribute their views, especially if they had gone through the NS experience themselves.
Who is the speaker?
Brother Lye-Sum is an elder from Ebenezer Church (www.ebenezer.sg), where he teaches & preaches regularly. After serving 24 years of NS, he recently retired from his Brigade so that he could redeem time for family & church commitments. A Combat Engineer by vocation, he was one of the top graduates of the 6th National Service Officers’ Command Course in 1997 and was Formation NSman of the Year 2003. Under his command, his NS Battalion achieved REDCON 1 status during their “defining” Battalion Proficiency Test in 2006. He served on the SAFRA Management Committee from 2006-2009 and received the SAFRA Meritorious Bronze Award in 2009. He and his wife Wendy have 3 teenage sons, the eldest of whom will be enlisted into the Singapore Police Force in Feb 2014.
